This just happened the other day. We had an interview for a magazine and at first the cameraman seemed a little nervous being with a blind sailor for the first time but after being together on the yacht for about 3 hours he was comfortable and at the end we all posed for a pictures inside the yacht. Well, the cameraman started using gestures as he said "Hiro-san, can you look over there?" Of course, the cameraman was only doing what he usually does, there were no bad intentions, it's easy to understand why. But to point a direction to a blind man and say "That way" or "Right there" well, how is a blind man supposed to understand which way? So why did the cameraman do that? Well, that's because after spending time on the yacht with Hiro-san for 2 hours, he completely forgot that Hiro-san is blind. That is how good Hiro-san's sailing skills are. Obviously, that is an amazing thing but for me who will be sailing with Hiro-san, but for me to forget that he is blind can be dangerous for him. For example, a rope that's just lying on the deck is no danger to us but for a man who can't see it, calling it life threatening may be exaggerating a bit but it's certainly would be a safety issue for him I really feel the need to remind myself not to rely on Hiro-san's amazing skills and really get it together.
